Kenya:

There are two orphanages in Africa run by the Daughters of the Sacred Heart. They are both located in Kenya around the capital city of Nairobi.

The Teresa Nuzzo Childrenīs Home was opened on April 17th, 2001 and is located in Riruta Satellite in Kabiria, Nairobi. This is a slum area just outside of central Nairobi. The home was created to provide a home, a safe environment, education and spiritual enrichment for girls. The children in the home were orphaned usually due to parental death caused by AIDS. Often these girls were placed with relatives who were unable to care them. Many of these girls end up on the streets in this area. The sisters have also taken infants who were abandoned. Currently there are two infant girls being cared for.

The house can accommodate seventy children but now has just over 50 girls. Each girl is provided with an education which must be paid for and becomes more costly for the older girls who must attend boarding school for safety concerns. Currently, Sister Lucy Mbuthia is the sister in charge of the orphanage and there are at least five or so other sisters there on a rotational basis with differing duties.

The sisters live in a home that is adjacent sharing a 3/4 acre property. The sisters support the local community by providing services and basic needs to most indigent and assist the church that is next door, St. Jude. The sisters also run a kindergarten school for children in the area.

The sisters would like more funding to purchase more beds to take in more children. Also funding medical expenses, clothing and tuition is a constant need.

The home aims at helping each child to grow into an adult who can stand on her own and become responsible member of society. The motto is LOVE and THRIVE. The sisters believe that those who come to the home will become useful citizens of the nation, bring forth change and thus help Kenya become a better place.
